What is Number Theory

Number Theory, of old, is a science of reading energy patterns by means of numbers. The energy patterns and the language of numbers have existed from the beginning of time. It is through the development of a civilization of independent and intelligent thinking beings like humans that sciences like Number Theory and Astrology take form.

In our known history Number Theory had been practiced by the Egyptians, the Sumerians, the Babylonians, the Chaldeans, the Mayans, the Hebrews and the Greeks. In the Bible we find passages where numbers have a symbolic meaning. Think about the passage in Mark 8:19-20 where Jesus says: "When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him, "Twelve." "When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?" They answered (him), "Seven." He said to them, "Do you still not understand?". The numbers mentioned here hint at universal laws. If we recognize and understand these laws, we also understand what passages like these mean. In ancient times only the initiated received deeper knowledge of the laws of the universe. Now we live in a time when everyone can receive deeper knowledge. We only need to have the will to see and understand.

Meaning of Numbers

For most people numbers are nothing more than fixed symbols for quantities. Indeed, that is one of the applications of numbers. But realize that everything around us consists of relations being expressions of energy patterns and it may not be so difficult to accept that numbers also have a symbolic meaning. Our decimal number system is not, as most people think, a human invention. Although the symbols themselves are related to a language or group of languages, the ten qualities they represent are universal. 9 is a limit in the universe. Before we go into the practical application of numbers, I will first describe the universal meaning of each number.

0 IS INFINITY, the unnamable and undefinable. It is the symbol for the infinite regeneration process from the unmanifested to the manifested and back, the one process prevalent in all of Creation. 0 symbolizes the circle which we can draw with our pen without having to stop. In our decimal system we use 0 to add ten or a tenth by which numbers can become infinitly large or infinitly small.

1 IS THE BEGINNING of all things. It brings creative energy "from above" to set things in motion, to concretize an idea or thought. 1 is the male energy, very dynamic, impulsive, aggressive and resourceful. It focusses its energy into a specific direction. He is indisputably the leader. In the symbol 1 we recognize the wand of the Magician who directs cosmic source energy and materializes objects out of thin air.

2 IS POLARIZATION of 1. In order to create there need to be two opposite poles like man-woman, positive-negative, light-darkness, hot-cold. It is the interaction, the energy exchange between the two poles that brings forth creativity. 2 is more static, calm and cautious, typical female aspects. The symbol 2 consists of a half circle and a half triangle ending in a horizontal line. From the infinite (the circle) stems the finite (the horizon). Note that the vertical line of number 1 builds a cross with the horizontal line of number 2.

3 IS CREATIVITY, the product of the energy exchange or interaction between 1 and 2, between male and female. 3 connects the male and female energies, just as a child confirms the relationship between its father and mother. Associated qualities of number 3 are inspiration, growth and fertility. In the symbol 3 we see an opened circle, like a bursted egg from which new life has emerged.

4 IS TRANSFORMATION from form-less to form-more or from one form to the next. Creation of life transforms one existence to another, unmanifested to manifested and back. A human soul fully integrates into its physical body in the fourth year (most people do not remember much from their first three years). Humans generally experience their puberty between 12 (3x4) and 16 (4x4), also a four year's period. It always involves a transformation process. Symbolically we see a half triangle and a cross. It tells us that the manifested world of time and space is but half the truth, the other half is the unmanifested or unseen world.

5 IS TRANSCENDENCE of energy, the exceeding of limitations. 5 means freedom, travel and communication; humans communicate with the physical world through 5 senses. The symbol 5 displays a half square and a half circle, signifying the eternal relationship between the finite, limited world of matter and the infinite unlimited world of spirit. 5 bridges worlds and allows communication between them; it accepts no limitations of any kind.

6 IS HARMONIZATION between the microcosmos and the macrocosmos. The microcosmos attunes itself to its macrocosmos to do the Greater Will. It requires devotion, responsibility and service, qualities that come with number 6. This symbol consists of a vertical line attached to a circle, the microcosmos attuning itself upward (or inward) to its macrocosmos. 6 is Love in Action.

7 IS REFLECTION. 7 is a half triangle faced downward, symbolizing the half truth upside down, the manifested or material world being a mirror of the unmanifested or inner world. In the mirror we see ourself reflected. 7 tries to see/find the truth behind the veil of illusion by connecting with Inner Self rather than with the outer world. Rest, meditation and self analysis are qualities of number 7.

8 IS BALANCE of energies. Two circles connected to each other symbolizes the universal flow of energies between male and female, positive and negative. It is the natural occurence of action and reaction; an action taken from one point invokes an equal but opposite reaction. This way any creation, be it a universe, a galaxy, a planet or even a mineral maintains the necessary balance allowing it to exist and evolve.

9 IS REALIZATION of Self. The smaller, limited self comes into balance with its Higher Self and understands its cycle is about to complete. This can be done willingly by letting go of everything gained in the previous cycle which is no longer needed and would only allow for stagnation if held onto. If not done willingly, increased pain and suffering would signal the urge to let go and move on to the next cycle. 9 complements 6. Where 6 attunes upward, 9 attunes from above, the macrocosmos urging its microcosmic version to step onto the next higher level of evolution.

We can clearly see these 9 aspects of creation build a cycle of evolutionary development. We start a new cycle (1) and evolve to the next through all the nine aspects, entering a new level when the realization (9) of that cycle is complete. Numerologically, any number above 9 can be reduced to one of these 9 aspects; 10 becomes 1 (1+0), 28 also becomes 1 (2+8=10, 1+0=1). This is called the reduction of numbers and we write 10/1 or 28/1. A special attribute signifying the quality of number 9 is that any number added to it results in that same number. For instance, if we add 5 to 9, the result is 14 and 14 reduces to 5 (1+4). However multiplying number 9 always results in number 9: 2x9=18 (1+8=9), 3x9=27 (2+7=9).

The Vibration of a Date

Reducing numbers to its base number allows us to determine the vibration of a day, a month, a year or even a date. Say someone was born on August 27, 1993. August is the 8th month so we add: 2+7+8+1+9+9+3=39. So the vibration of this person's birthdate is 39 with base number 3 (3+9=12, 1+2=3), thus we write 39/3. Another way numerologists reduce dates is to first reduce the year once, in this case 1+9+9+3=22. Then add 27+8+22=57. The result is still 3 (5+7=12, 1+2=3), but a different one; 12, 21, 30, 39, etc., all have base number 3, but the double digit numbers show the nuances. I have learned that both methods are valid and worth looking at.

The vibration of a name

We can also determine the vibration of a name by giving each letter the value of its position in the alphabet:

The letters J through Z are being given their base number so as to provide each letter with a value 1 through 9. Now we can determine the vibration of a name. Let's take the name Abel:

1+2+5+3=11/2

Master Number

There is one exception to the reduction of numbers, number 11, because it is considered a master number. If a date, a name or any number combination results in 29, 38, 47, 56, etc., we won't reduce it to number 2 but to number 11. Thus we write 29/11 instead of 29/2 even though the base number is still 2. However we do reduce letters, so K=2 and not 11, and if a number combination results in 11 we write 11/2, as with the name Abel.

Interpretation of Events

Instead of applying numerology to a person, we can also apply it to events. Every event in the universe has a cause and intention. Nothing happens by chance. By interpreting the numbers that manifest with an event we may get a clearer perspective as to why it happened.

So how do we interpret an event? Let's take the attacks on the WTC as an example. This event took place on September 11, 2001. We reduce the date by adding up: 11+9+3=23/5. This number 5 indicates that this event will ultimately lead to freedom for all people since number 5 symbolizes freedom and communication and the resolution of limitations and restrictions of any kind. Number 23 tells us that all forms of diplomacy, discretion and prudence (2) will be dominated by unrestricted growth and development of consciousness (3). As you can see we interpret double digit numbers from right to left. In this example the influence of the 3 in number 23 acts through the 2.

Reducing and interpreting numbers requires practice. If you are not yet familiar with the value of letters you should try to memorize them as it will serve you when interpreting names. It is one of the first steps into numerology. Interpreting numbers also requires experience and intuition. You can develop your Intuition by opening up to the numbers; try to feel what a number or combination of numbers wants to tell you and combine that feeling with your observations. As with all disciplines, practice makes perfect.
